Fluoride

Fluoride

The outer layer of a tooth is called enamel and is conformed of mineral crystals. Minerals are gained and lost daily. Plaque, sugar and other carbohydrates produce acids in the oral cavity, causing the lost of minerals. Saliva helps fight the process of demineralization, bringing back minerals such as fluoride, calcium and phosphate. An increase in the loss of minerals without replacement leads to caries.

Fluoride helps speed up remineralization, prevents plaque from building up and hardening in the tooth surface. It is also an effective aid in cavity and tooth decay prevention.

Fluoride treatment only takes a few minutes to be applied on the outside of the teeth, and adults and children may receive it. After treatment is performed the patient won’t be able to rinse, drink or eat for 30 minutes to an hour, to allow the product to be absorbed by the tooth structure. Depending in the condition of your oral health it may be recommended every 3 to 12 months.

If your child is under 3 years old, brush their teeth with close supervision and apply a thin layer of fluoride toothpaste on their toothbrush.
