Mouthguards and nightguards

Mouthguards and nightguards

Mouthguards or Sportsguard

The American Dental Association projects that one third of all dental injuries are sports related. Some of the damages that can occur are: chipped or broken teeth, fractured jaws, cheek injuries and root damages.

Most athletes are at risk of suffering dental injuries but it can be prevented with the use of a sportguard.

A mouthguard is a removable appliance made out of a soft plastic or laminate that is used to protect your teeth and gums from injury.

Types of mouth guards:

  • Pre-made, “boil-and-bite” fitted mouthguard and a custom-made from a dentist. Custom-made mouthguards may be customized to match your favorite color or team.

Selecting the correct mouthguard is essential. Make sure to pick one that is tear proof, easy to clean, comfortable and that fits properly.

If you participate in any kind of full-contact sport it is essential for children or adults to wear a mouthguard, especially if you are wearing braces.

Many people don’t even know if they are clenching or grinding their teeth. Some of the signs are cracked teeth, wear facets, jaw pain or headaches. One of the common treatments of bruxism is a nightguard. They are inserted in your upper or lower teeth, which prevent the contact with the opposing teeth alleviating the discomfort and protecting your teeth.

Difference between nightguard and sportguard

Sportguards are made with thicker materials and might extend to the gum area and even cover the entire jaw to protect completely.

Nightguards are fabricated using softer materials but strong enough to serve its function.
