Root canals

Root canals

A root canal is a procedure that saves damaged or infected teeth.

Starting from exterior to interior the tooth is divided in: 1.Enamel, 2. Dentin 3. Pulp. The pulp is a soft tissue that contains connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves. It provides the nutrients to the tooth.

When a root canal is performed the pulp is removed from the inside of the tooth, the canals are cleaned, disinfected and shaped to finally seal the space. Usually a crown is recommended after root canal therapy to protect the tooth from future fractures.

Common reasons for a root canal:

  • Pulp becomes inflamed or infected.
  • Fractured teeth.
  • Extensive tooth decay.
  • Dental trauma.

Possible symptoms:

  • Tooth ache ranging from mild to severe.
  • Prolonged sensitivity/pain to hot or cold.
  • Bone loss around tooth.
  • Recurring or persistent pimple in the gums.
  • Darkening of the tooth.
  • Sometimes there are no symptoms present.
